The many dimensions of human beings as brought out in the Indian epics never cease to amaze me. Ravan has been avidly prtrayed in modern day films and elsewhere as the villain of Ramayana, who was responsible for the destruction of Lanka.
However, something which most people do not know , is that he was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He even tried to uproot Mount Kailash, Shiva's abode , to take it home to Lanka.
Before crossing the sea to Lanka, to rescue Sita, Rama prayed on the seashore to Lord Shiva for his blessings. He wished to perform a yagna, but could not find any suitable priest in that area to perform it. Ravan came to know of this through his spies. So great was his love for Shiva that he could not bear the thought of Shiva's worship not taking place. So, he disguised himself as a priest, went to Rama and performed the yagna, praying to Shiva , on Rama's behalf, for his own destruction.
Can we find a better example of ethics and integrity in today's world.
